Mushtaq Ahmed Memon

Regional Coordinator for Resource Efficiency, Asia & the Pacific Office, UN Environment

Dr. Memon is working with UN Environment (United Nations Environment Programme) as a Regional Coordinator for Resource Efficiency in Asia Pacific Office located in Bangkok. He is supporting resource efficiency, sustainable consumption and production, green economy, green financing, sustainable public procurement, sustainable tourism, sustainable industries and various areas for Asia and the Pacific. He is also implementing EU funded SWITCH-Asia Phase 2 component by UN Environment to support Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 12 on sustainable consumption and production in the region.

Dr. Memon is also Project Manager for Regional Policy Advocacy Component of the EU-funded SWITCH-Asia Programme to promote sustainable consumption and production and uptake of SDG 12 in Asia.

Till end of 2016, Dr. Memon was working at UN Environment’s office in Osaka, Japan (International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC). He has more than 25 years of intensive experience in project planning and management. He has implemented various international projects in many different sectors including seaports, water supply, and waste management with a focus on international cooperation for environmental services and sustainable development.

Dr. Memon, during his 12 years tenure at UN Environment office in Japan, implemented a major international programme on solid waste, wastewater and air pollution in Asia, Africa and Latin America and Caribbean. Under this programme, about 30 countries and their cities will be assisted to develop national and city waste management strategies with associated action plans and pilot demos. Academic curriculum on waste management for postgraduate degree (initially for Masters) is being developed through consortiums of universities in each region. Various research and capacity building materials are also being produced.

Dr. Memon has a Doctorate degree in environmental and resource economics from Hiroshima University in Japan, a Master’s degree in national development and project planning from University of Bradford in UK, a postgraduate diploma in Transport from Karachi University and Chartered Institute of Transport, Bachelors in civil engineering from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro and schooling at Cadet College Petaro in Pakistan. He has also published various papers in international journals and has delivered various training programmes.
